Bali Hi

After a 14 hour flight, a 3 hour layover and a 4 1/2 hour flight, we arrived safely in Bali, Indonesia.  Unfortunately, our waiting wasn't over yet: the line for immigration was two hours long!  The line extended so far that it nearly reached the entrance, Even the immigration security officer was surprised at how long the line was. It was a bit of a frustrating end to two long flights.

Luckily, our ride was patient and we are now at our beautiful, quiet guest house, Cozy Wayan Sueta Homestay, northwest of Ubud.

We are staying with a very sweet, kind, and funny family: Wayan and Ayu run it, and their boys, Agus and Anta provide walking tours. The family compound is filled with shade from banana, Jackfruit and durian trees, and tons of beautiful flowering trees and brightly colored plants.  The wife, Ayu is a fantastic cook with a kind heart and a beautiful smile. And so funny! They raise a few chickens, and hens, cocks and chicks (both baby and adolescents) wander around freely. Interestingly, both the hens and cocks have red Mohawks and beards.  The cocks in area are continuously talking back and forth with their cock-a-doodle-dos. Ayu and Wayan also have a dog (named Fido!) and a few cats.  All the animals which just wander around, leaving the humans be. The air is so fresh and the surroundings are so peaceful that our decision to stay here was reinforced immediately upon arrival.

Our room is also very relaxing. We were upgraded to a bigger room with a walk-in closet.  But better still, last night I took a warm shower under the moonlight in a private rock- and plant-lined open-air shower attached to our room.  Suffice it to say that we slept beautifully and we are hoping to extend  our stay for a few more days.

Overwhelming Support for Nepal

I feel overwhelmed with gratitude by the outpouring of support from friends, family, colleagues, and students. Thanks to you, we received about a dozen boxes and two dozen bags of donations!  Not all of it was completely appropriate clothing, so some of it will be donated to local homeless shelters.  That said, the vast majority will be going to Nepal.

Shark! Jellyfish!! Turtle!!!

After my moonlit dip, I slept like a rock, as I often do when there's an ocean nearby. Unless there's also a fog horn. Or a mosque.  I woke up to use the bathroom and realized that dawn was just breaking. It was a gorgeous morning, so I decided to climb the Kanawa Island hill to watch the sunrise. It was beautiful.

Eastern Bali

Last week we left Flores and Kanawa behind, and made our way to Tulamben, in Eastern Bali.  Toulamben is home of a volcano that was last active in 1965, USAT Liberty wreck just offshore, and black sand/rock beaches.
